On a Sunday morning I woke up feeling like going for a hiking and was going to be in Orange County, so I looked up the internet and found this Peter Canyon Regional Park. Park is located in the city of Orange conveniently off the 55 freeway Chapman exit roughly ten minutes east.
According to the park brochure, Peters Canyon Regional Park was part of a Spanish land grant called the Rancho Lomas de Santiago. The ranch was bought by James Irvine in 1897 and leased out to farmers. Two reservoirs were later built within the park to help regulate water supply from Irvine Lake (known as Santiago Reservoir at the time). It was even used as a training area during World War II before Irvine Company dedicated the land to the County.
The park offers trials at different difficulties and uses, such as hiking, biking and equestrian; however, the 2.5 miles lake view trial loop is the best. Peter Canyon trial map can be found at the official Orange County website: http://www.ocparks.com/uploadgraphics/PetersCanyon_Map%281%29.pdf
